Phillip Hobbs & Johnson White
Sandhill Stables, Somerset
Philip Hobbs reached the incredible milestone of 3000 winners in March 2023 before taking out a joint licence with his long-standing assistant trainer Johnson White.
Philip had a successful career as a jockey, riding 160 winners, before following in his father’s footsteps and set up training in 1985 with just six horses. Since then, his operation at Sandhill Stables in Somerset has housed multiple Grade 1 winners, such as What’s Up Boys, Rooster Booster, Detroit City, Menorah, Captain Chris, Wishful Thinking, Defi Du Seuil and most recently Thyme Hill. Philip trained seventeen Cheltenham Festival winners and twice trained the runner up in the Grand National.
Johnson White has been a vital part of the team at Sandhill for over 30 years, having started riding out for Philip in his school holidays at the age of 15. His early ambitions of becoming a jockey were dashed due to his height, but he become a permanent member of the team a few years later as assistant trainer and has never looked back.
