William Haggas

Location: Newmarket, Suffolk. William Haggas has long been one of Highclere’s principal trainers and remains as popular as ever with our owners. He has enjoyed many successes with Highclere horses over the years, such as Approve (G2 Norfolk & G2 Gimcrack), Brunel (German 2000 Guineas) and Conquest (Stewards’ Cup winner).

William and his wife Maureen are a hardworking duo who together have trained over 2,500 winners and developed an impressive training facility in the heart of Newmarket, which spans two yards and includes a spa, vibration plate, salt room and two treadmills.

Since training his first winner, Tricky Note in 1987, William has enjoyed multiple Group 1 successes, including seven Classic winners. In 2011 William became a member of the elite band of trainers to have saddled two Epsom Classic winners when Dancing Rain won the Oaks to add to Shaamit’s 1996 Derby victory. William's other Group 1 successes include the likes of Mukhadram, Rivet, Urban Fox, Sea of Class, One Master, Addeybb, Alenquer, Sea Silk Road and Sea La Rosa.

He masterfully handled the career of 2022 Cartier Horse of the Year and six time Group 1 winner, Baaeed. William continues to break new ground and enjoyed successful forays to Australia in 2023 with Dubai Honour, winning two Group 1s, including the $5million Queen Elizabeth Stakes, a race in which he has been successful twice with Addeybb.

2024 was no different for William with Dubai Honour, Montassib and Economics all providing their trainer with Group 1 victories helping the team at Somerville to nearly £4 million in prize money. Once again 2024 has highlighted William’s effectiveness with horses over any distance.

William’s association with Highclere continues to flourish we look forward to another exciting season with William in 2025.
